LOS ANGELES, California — A suspected car thief led police on a dramatic chase through North Hollywood after allegedly attempting to steal a Porsche by towing it behind a pickup truck, leaving the luxury sports car badly damaged before officers arrested the suspect.
Authorities said the unusual theft attempt unfolded early this week when a witness spotted a man trying to steal a gray Porsche and immediately called police. By the time officers arrived, the suspect had already attached the Porsche to a black pickup truck using a makeshift towing setup and was preparing to drive away.
Suspect Flees After Ignoring Police Commands
According to police, officers ordered the suspect to stop, but instead he sped away, triggering a pursuit along Tujunga Avenue.
As the pickup accelerated, the Porsche was dragged behind it at high speed. With no proper towing equipment in place, the sports car’s front end scraped against curbs and pavement, causing extensive damage.
“The suspect refused to stop and fled from officers, initiating a pursuit,” police said following the incident.
Tow Connection Snaps During Chase
The dangerous getaway came to an abrupt turn when the improvised tow connection failed.
Authorities said the tow bar eventually broke, causing the Porsche to separate from the pickup and roll to a stop outside a nearby car wash. Despite losing the stolen vehicle, the suspect continued driving and attempted to escape police.
The pursuit continued for roughly another ten minutes before officers caught up with the driver near Sherman Way and Canal Loop, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
NBC Los Angeles reported that the suspect was arrested on felony evading charges.
Luxury Sports Car Left With Heavy Damage
Cellphone video captured after the chase showed the Porsche had suffered significant damage during the failed theft.
The hood, front bumper and lower front end appeared heavily scraped after being dragged along asphalt and curbs for several blocks. Investigators said the vehicle was never designed to be towed in such a manner, especially at high speed using an improvised hitch.
“The hood and front bumper took the brunt of the damage,” witnesses at the scene observed after the chase ended.
Authorities have not yet released an estimate of the repair costs.
Investigation Continues
Police have not identified the suspect or the owner of the Porsche, and investigators continue working to determine whether additional charges will be filed.
Officials also reminded drivers that vehicles should only be transported using approved towing equipment operated by trained professionals, noting that unsafe towing methods can cause severe damage and create significant hazards for other motorists.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives review evidence from the pursuit and interview witnesses.
