A late-night gathering near Morgan Hill turned deadly over the weekend after gunfire broke out in the middle of a large, unsanctioned party, leaving one person dead and six others injured, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
The chaos began just after 10 p.m. Saturday, when deputies were called to the area of Hale Avenue near Miramonte Avenue following reports of intoxicated attendees wandering into traffic and hurling bottles at passing cars. What officials found when they arrived was far worse than expected.
Investigators say deputies walked into a “chaotic scene,” with an estimated 300 people scrambling to flee the property after shots rang out. Amid the panic, one victim was pronounced dead at the location, while authorities later confirmed a total of seven people had been struck by gunfire.
Detectives believe a handgun was used in the shooting. So far, officials are calling it an isolated incident, though the search for answers is far from over. Investigators have not identified a motive, and no suspects have been named as the case remains under active investigation.
According to the sheriff’s office, the gathering had been quietly organized and spread through social media, drawing a crowd large enough to overwhelm the response when violence broke out.
Given the scale of the scene, multiple agencies were pulled in to help stabilize the area. The Morgan Hill Police Department, Gilroy Police Department, California Highway Patrol, and San Jose Police Department all assisted with securing the location, managing traffic, and supporting the investigation.
Authorities say identifying the shooter — or shooters — will likely take time, calling it a complex case that could stretch on for weeks. For now, investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to piece together exactly what triggered the gunfire in the middle of a crowd of hundreds.
