NEWARK, Delaware — Four people were injured in a late-night shooting outside a Waffle House in Newark early Friday, prompting an ongoing investigation by Delaware State Police as authorities search for the suspect or suspects responsible.
The shooting occurred shortly after midnight on July 18, when troopers responded to reports of gunfire at the Waffle House parking lot. Investigators believe the gunfire erupted while a large crowd had gathered outside the restaurant, leaving four people wounded before the suspect or suspects fled the scene.
Four Victims Suffer Gunshot Wounds
According to Delaware State Police, officers arrived to find three victims suffering from gunshot wounds in the restaurant’s parking lot.
Authorities identified the victims as a 20-year-old man, a 19-year-old man, and an 18-year-old woman, all of whom were transported to a nearby hospital. Police said their injuries were serious but not considered life-threatening.
A fourth victim, a 17-year-old girl, later arrived at a hospital in a private vehicle. Officials said she also suffered gunshot injuries that were not life-threatening.
Investigators Believe Shots Were Fired From Crowd
Preliminary findings indicate that one or more unidentified suspects opened fire from within a large crowd gathered in the parking lot before fleeing the area.
Police have not announced what led to the shooting or whether the victims were specifically targeted. Investigators are reviewing evidence collected at the scene and working to determine exactly how the violence unfolded.
“State Police believe an unknown suspect or suspects from a large crowd that had gathered in the parking lot began firing multiple shots,” investigators said in a statement.
