McHenry County authorities are investigating a deadly boat crash on the Fox River that left a middle-aged woman dead Saturday afternoon, officials confirmed.
The collision happened around 2:30 p.m. near South Fernwood Lane, when the boat the woman was riding in was struck by another vessel, according to authorities. The impact was severe enough that a portion of the river had to be shut down while emergency crews responded and investigators worked the scene.
Footage taken shortly after the crash showed visible damage along the left side of the woman’s boat as it was pulled from the water and hauled away, a grim reminder of how forceful the collision was.
As of Sunday, officials said details remained limited. Investigators are believed to still be searching for the driver of the second boat involved in the crash, and it’s unclear whether that person has been identified or located.
Separately, a man was taken into custody overnight on charges of reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence. Authorities have not confirmed whether that arrest is connected to the fatal boat crash, and the investigation into both incidents appears to be ongoing.
The crash has rattled the local boating community, prompting at least one public official to speak out. State Sen. Craig Wilcox shared a message with his followers Saturday night, urging residents along the river to stay alert. He asked people to watch for anyone who might be injured or appear to be a boater who seems out of place, and encouraged them to contact police immediately, even if they only had suspicions.
Officials have not released the identity of the woman who died, pending family notification. Authorities have also not said whether charges will be filed in connection with the crash itself.
The investigation remains active, and anyone with information has been urged to come forward as authorities continue working to determine exactly what happened on the water that afternoon.
