HIGHLAND, California — A 2-year-old boy died after suffering a gunshot wound at an apartment complex in San Bernardino County on Thursday in what authorities believe may have been a tragic accidental shooting. Investigators are continuing to determine exactly how the incident unfolded, while officials say additional information will be released as the investigation progresses.
The shooting occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. at an apartment complex near the intersection of Pacific Street and Victoria Avenue in the city of Highland. Emergency responders rushed the toddler to a nearby hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.
Child Succumbs to Gunshot Injury
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to reports of a child suffering a gunshot wound at the apartment complex.
Public Information Officer Floria Orejel confirmed that the young boy was transported to a hospital following the incident, where medical staff later pronounced him dead.
“The child suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased,” Orejel told KTLA.
Authorities have not released the child’s identity or disclosed who was present at the time of the shooting.
Witness Account Remains Unconfirmed
Investigators have not yet explained how the shooting occurred, and officials cautioned that the circumstances remain under investigation.
A witness told a photojournalist with RMG News that the toddler allegedly found a firearm inside the apartment, walked outside with it and accidentally shot himself. However, law enforcement officials emphasized that they have not confirmed that version of events.
Detectives are expected to examine witness statements, physical evidence and the firearm involved to determine exactly what happened.
Detectives Continue Investigation
Video from the scene showed a significant law enforcement presence as sheriff’s deputies and detectives canvassed the apartment complex for evidence and interviewed potential witnesses.
Authorities have not announced whether any arrests have been made, and no criminal charges have been filed at this stage of the investigation.
Orejel said investigators are still gathering information and that additional details will be released as they become available.
Authorities Urge Safe Firearm Storage
Although investigators have not confirmed how the child gained access to the firearm, law enforcement agencies routinely remind gun owners to store firearms unloaded, locked and out of the reach of children to help prevent accidental shootings.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has not yet determined whether the incident will result in criminal charges, and the investigation remains ongoing.
