WEEKI WACHEE, Florida — A routine patrol along Florida’s scenic Weeki Wachee River turned into an unforgettable animal rescue after a Hernando County sheriff’s deputy saved a dog that became tangled in a rope while chasing an oversized stick. Despite being rescued, the determined pup refused to let go of her favorite prize, creating a lighthearted ending to what could have been a dangerous situation.
Deputy Rescues Dog Trapped in River
According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Shafer was patrolling the Weeki Wachee River on a jet ski when he spotted a dog struggling in the water. The animal had become caught on a rope while swimming after a large branch, and the owner called out for help as the situation unfolded.
Acting quickly, Deputy Shafer reached the dog on his jet ski and used a knife to cut the rope that had trapped her. He then safely pulled both the dog and the oversized stick onto the watercraft.
Stubborn Pup Refused to Leave Her Stick Behind
Although the rescue was successful, the dog wasn’t ready to part with the branch she had worked so hard to retrieve.
Officials said the determined pup held tightly onto the oversized stick even after reaching safety, refusing to give it up despite the unexpected rescue. The amusing moment quickly turned what could have been a frightening incident into a memorable one.
Authorities have not released the names of the dog or its owner, nor have they confirmed the exact date and time of the rescue.
“That Made My Day”
Once the dog was safely out of danger, Deputy Shafer decided to let the game continue.
He tossed the stick back into the water, and the energetic pup immediately jumped in again before swimming safely back to shore with her treasured prize. Watching the happy ending unfold, the deputy summed up the experience with a smile.
“That made my day, right there!” Deputy Shafer said as he drove away after the rescue.
Reminder About Water Safety for Pets
While the incident ended with smiles, officials say it highlights how quickly recreational outings near rivers can become dangerous for pets.
Ropes, strong currents, boats, and other obstacles can easily create life-threatening situations, even during a simple game of fetch. Authorities encourage pet owners to closely supervise animals around waterways and seek help immediately if an emergency occurs.
Emergency responders also remind the public that trained personnel often have the equipment and experience needed to safely rescue animals without putting additional lives at risk.
The Weeki Wachee River rescue had a happy ending thanks to the dog’s owner recognizing the danger quickly and Deputy Shafer’s fast response. The unforgettable encounter also left one clear lesson: sometimes even a rescue isn’t enough to convince a determined dog to give up her favorite stick.
