California Man Killed After Police Chase Ends in Officer-Involved Shooting in Simi Valley

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — A 37-year-old man was killed Tuesday after leading police on a pursuit through Simi Valley that ended when his pickup truck crashed into a parked police motorcycle and the front of a home. Moments after the crash, officers opened fire during what authorities described as an officer-involved shooting. Investigators have not yet disclosed what prompted officers to use deadly force.

The incident followed an hours-long search that began after police responded to a domestic violence call earlier in the day. Neighbors later suggested the man may have been experiencing a mental health crisis, though officials have not confirmed that information.

Hours-Long Search Ended in High-Speed Pursuit

According to the Simi Valley Police Department, officers were first called to the 2500 block of Dusan Avenue around 8:15 a.m. to investigate reports of domestic violence. Authorities said the man had already left the area before officers arrived.

Investigators said officers intended to arrest him on suspicion of battery and elder abuse. Family members also reportedly told police the man was armed and had threatened to “shoot it out” with officers if they were called.

The suspect was later located near Simi Valley Town Center around 1:30 p.m., but refused to stop, triggering a pursuit through nearby residential neighborhoods.

Truck Crashes Into Home Before Police Open Fire

Witnesses captured video showing the white pickup speeding through neighborhood streets before crashing into a parked police motorcycle and the front of a nearby home on Dusan Avenue.

Once that occurred, officers tried to engage him, and an officer-involved shooting occurred right at the crash scene,” a police official said.

Authorities have not revealed whether the man displayed or fired a weapon before officers opened fire. They also have not confirmed whether police gunfire caused his death, although the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors Describe Chaotic Moments

Residents said the neighborhood quickly filled with police vehicles before multiple gunshots rang out.

Neighbor Bethany Ferrara recalled hearing the confrontation unfold outside her home.

“I saw the lights and the sirens, and then all of a sudden I heard, like, a bunch of popping over and over,” Ferrara said.

Ferrara later spoke with one of the man’s relatives following the shooting.

“I just tried to console her. She was crying and freaking out,” she said.

Some neighbors said they believed the man had been struggling with mental health issues, but authorities have not independently confirmed those claims.

Home Damaged, Investigation Continues

The pickup truck crashed into a residence and a trailer parked outside the property. Fortunately, the homeowner and his children were away at the time.

“Luckily, nobody was home. We’re safe,” the resident said. “Those things are material. We’ll replace them.”

Police confirmed that no officers or nearby residents were injured during the incident.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting, including what occurred in the moments leading up to the use of deadly force.

The allegations and details released so far are based on the preliminary investigation, and authorities have not yet announced whether additional evidence, including body-camera footage, will be released.
