SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — A domestic violence suspect was shot and killed by police Tuesday after leading officers on a brief chase that ended in a violent crash inside a residential Simi Valley neighborhood, authorities said. The incident began with a reported domestic disturbance and escalated into an officer-involved shooting that remains under investigation.
Police said the 37-year-old Simi Valley man had fled his home before officers arrived Tuesday morning to investigate allegations of domestic battery and elder abuse. Investigators later located the suspect several hours later, but he allegedly refused to stop, triggering a pursuit that ended back near the original neighborhood.
Domestic Violence Investigation Led to Search for Suspect
According to the Simi Valley Police Department, officers responded to the 2500 block of Dusan Street around 8:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance and assault.
By the time officers arrived, the suspect had already left the residence. Following a preliminary investigation, police determined there was probable cause to arrest him on suspicion of domestic battery and elder abuse.
Family members also warned officers that the suspect was armed and had allegedly threatened violence if police became involved.
“Upon leaving, said that if the police were called, he will, ‘shoot it out’ with them,” Officer Casey Nicholson said.
Police Chase Ended in Crash and Gunfire
Authorities said officers spotted the suspect driving near Simi Valley Town Center at approximately 1:35 p.m. and attempted a traffic stop.
Instead of pulling over, the suspect allegedly sped away, leading officers on a short pursuit through the city.
“Those officers tried to make a traffic stop on that car, but the suspect fled and led the officers in a short pursuit that ultimately ended up back over here in this neighborhood,” Nicholson said.
The chase ended when the suspect’s white pickup truck crashed into an unoccupied police motorcycle near Dusan Street. Officers then opened fire, striking the suspect multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
Witnesses Describe Chaotic Scene
Videos captured by witnesses showed officers rushing toward the crashed pickup before multiple rounds of gunfire rang out.
One neighbor described hearing a barrage of shots moments after police vehicles entered the neighborhood.
“I was sitting in the house, heard a bunch of sirens… then all of a sudden, all I heard was ‘pop, pop, pop, pop, pop,'” the witness said.
Another resident, Kyra Ramirez, said the incident frightened everyone nearby.
“It was really scary. I told my grandpa, ‘Get inside!’ When I saw the car coming down… it was all crazy,” she said.
Friends told local media the suspect was a father who had lived in the neighborhood for several years. Authorities have not yet publicly released his identity.
Multiple Investigations Underway
The Simi Valley Police Department and the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office are conducting a criminal investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
Separately, the department’s Professional Standards Bureau will carry out an administrative review. Under department policy, all officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations.
Police are also asking anyone with information about the original domestic violence incident or the events leading up to the shooting to contact the department’s Major Crimes Unit.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. The information released by authorities reflects the preliminary findings, and investigators have not yet announced their final conclusions.
