NEW YORK — A former doctor convicted of sexual assault who spent more than two decades as a fugitive has been captured aboard a yacht off the East Coast, ending a 20-year manhunt that investigators say uncovered a life lived under multiple aliases, including as a biotechnology executive in Los Angeles.
Ronald L. Fischer, 70, was arrested last week after federal authorities intercepted his 56-foot sailing vessel, The Silver Lining, off the coast of New Jersey, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. Fischer had been wanted since 2005 after fleeing Rhode Island during his sexual assault trial.
Fugitive Lived Under Multiple Aliases
Authorities said Fischer disappeared while standing trial over allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman aboard a yacht known as the Lion King in 2003. He was later convicted in absentia of first-degree sexual assault after failing to return to court.
Investigators believe Fischer spent years using more than a dozen aliases, including Richard Graydon, the identity under which he allegedly built a successful career in the biotechnology industry.
According to authorities, Fischer worked as chief medical officer for Los Angeles-based Immix Biopharma while using the Graydon identity.
Biotech Company Ends Executive’s Employment
Following Fischer’s arrest, Immix Biopharma disclosed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that Graydon’s employment was terminated on July 17.
The company stated the decision was “for reasons unrelated to his activities at the company,” according to reports. Officials have not alleged that the company knew Fischer’s true identity while he was employed there.
Authorities described Fischer as a former anesthesiologist, experienced yachtsman and world traveler who had managed to remain undetected for years.
Investigators Tracked Yacht Off New Jersey Coast
The decades-old case gained new momentum after the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force and the FBI received fresh intelligence about Fischer’s whereabouts.
Investigators spent nearly 48 hours verifying the information before tracing him to the New York area. Working alongside the U.S. Coast Guard, federal agents located Fischer aboard The Silver Lining, approximately an hour off the New Jersey coast.
Officials said Fischer surrendered without incident when law enforcement intercepted the yacht.
Officials Say Justice Was Finally Served
Fischer remained wanted on charges including failure to appear, first-degree sexual assault and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
“For more than 20 years, Ronald Fischer believed he had successfully escaped justice,” U.S. Marshal Wing Chau said in a statement. “Thanks to outstanding investigative work, exceptional intelligence analysis and seamless coordination between agencies, Fischer is finally in custody.”
Authorities said Fischer is expected to be extradited to Rhode Island, where he will face the outstanding legal proceedings related to his conviction and fugitive status.
The sexual assault conviction was previously entered in Fischer’s absence after he fled during trial. His return to Rhode Island will allow authorities to move forward with the remaining legal process.
