SOUTH LOS ANGELES, California — A 20-year-old mother was tragically killed after a stray bullet tore through her South Los Angeles home while she was sleeping early Sunday morning, leaving behind her 1-year-old daughter and a grieving family. Police say the young woman was not the intended target, and the gunman remains on the run.
The victim was identified by her family as Maria Luisa Barrios, who was pronounced dead at the scene after the shooting occurred around 3:40 a.m. in the 400 block of West 103rd Street, just west of the 110 Freeway.
Young Mother Killed While Sleeping
According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), gunfire erupted outside the residence, and one of the bullets entered the home, striking Barrios in the head while she slept.
Investigators said no one else inside the home was injured. Authorities believe the shooter was outside on the street at the time of the incident and that Barrios was an innocent victim caught in the violence.
Police said they do not believe she was the intended target of the shooting.
Suspect Remains at Large
The gunman fled the area before officers arrived, and no arrests have been made.
Investigators said a witness reported seeing a man wearing a red shirt running from the scene shortly after the shooting. However, detectives have not confirmed whether the individual was the shooter or the intended target of the gunfire.
The LAPD continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and is asking anyone with information to come forward.
“We do not believe the victim was the intended target of the shooting,” the Los Angeles Police Department said during the investigation.
Family Mourns Devastating Loss
Barrios’ family described her as a loving mother whose sudden death has left loved ones devastated.
A GoFundMe campaign created to support the family said the tragedy has created an uncertain future for her young daughter.
“This sudden and heartbreaking event has left her family devastated and struggling to cope with the loss,” the fundraising page states.
The campaign says donations will help cover funeral expenses, transport Barrios’ remains to her family in Guatemala, and provide support for her 1-year-old daughter, who is now growing up without her mother.
Organizers also noted that most of Barrios’ relatives live in Guatemala, leaving little local support for the child during this difficult time.
Investigation Continues
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Barrios’ death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head.
Detectives are continuing to gather evidence, review surveillance footage, and interview witnesses in hopes of identifying the person responsible. As of Tuesday, police had not released a suspect description or announced a possible motive.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the LAPD as the investigation remains ongoing.
