SACRAMENTO, California — A Northern California man who spent nearly five years on the run in Mexico has been sentenced to 16 years to life in state prison for fatally stabbing his estranged wife’s boyfriend inside her Sacramento apartment in 2017.
Arturo Hernandez, now 33, was convicted in the killing of Anthony Freas, who was attacked while sleeping beside Hernandez’s estranged wife. Prosecutors said the deadly confrontation was fueled by jealousy after Hernandez discovered the couple’s relationship.
Fatal Attack Happened While Couple Was Sleeping
According to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Hernandez learned in November 2017 that his estranged wife was dating Freas. Investigators said he repeatedly tried calling her, but she did not answer.
On Nov. 19, 2017, Hernandez allegedly went to the Regency Apartments on Riza Avenue in Sacramento, forced his way into the apartment, entered the bedroom where the couple was sleeping, and stabbed Freas multiple times before fleeing.
Responding Sacramento police officers found Freas suffering from serious stab wounds to his upper body. Officers immediately began life-saving measures before paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Suspect Escaped to Mexico After Killing
Following the fatal stabbing, authorities launched a manhunt and warned that Hernandez should be considered armed and dangerous.
Investigators later determined that Hernandez had fled to Mexico, where he successfully avoided capture for nearly five years. Officials have not disclosed where he had been living or who may have assisted him while he remained a fugitive.
The case remained unsolved until July 2023, when Mexican authorities working alongside FBI agents located and arrested Hernandez. He was later extradited to California to face prosecution.
Jury Convicted Hernandez of Murder
After a trial in Sacramento, a jury found Hernandez guilty of second-degree murder on March 24. Jurors also found true the allegation that he personally used a deadly weapon during the attack.
On July 10, Judge Alyson Lewis sentenced Hernandez to 16 years to life in state prison, bringing the years-long case to a close.
“The defendant has now been held accountable for a violent crime that claimed a man’s life and forced a family to wait years for justice,” prosecutors said following the sentencing.
Case Ends After Years on the Run
The conviction marks the end of a lengthy international investigation involving local law enforcement, federal agents and Mexican authorities.
Officials have not released additional details regarding Hernandez’s time in Mexico, but his extradition allowed prosecutors to finally move forward with the homicide case after years of delays.
The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office credited the coordinated efforts of investigators and law enforcement agencies for ultimately bringing Hernandez back to the United States to stand trial.
