COLUMBUS, Ohio — Five people have been confirmed dead after a tragic incident on the Scioto River in central Ohio, where authorities launched a large-scale rescue operation Sunday night after a young child was found running along a highway asking for help.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office said the child was discovered around 9 p.m. on State Route 257 by a passing driver, who immediately contacted emergency services after the child reported that family members were in the river. The heartbreaking discovery led to an overnight search involving multiple fire, police, and rescue agencies.
Child’s Plea for Help Sparked Massive Rescue Operation
According to the sheriff’s office, first responders quickly arrived at the scene and began searching the river. Two adult women were pulled from the water and rushed to nearby hospitals, where they were later pronounced dead.
The search continued through Monday for three adult men believed to have also entered the river. Authorities confirmed that all three bodies were recovered around 2 p.m., bringing the death toll to five.
Sheriff’s officials said the victims’ identities are being withheld until relatives have been notified.
Authorities Continue Investigating What Happened
Investigators have not yet determined how the family ended up in the river or what caused the deadly incident.
“We’re investigating the incident and will provide updates as they become available,” the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Officials have not indicated whether weather, water conditions, or another factor contributed to the tragedy. Detectives are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
