A 14-year-old boy has died after his e-bike collided with a sports-utility vehicle in north suburban Wauconda, according to local police.
Authorities said officers responded to the 500 block of North Main Street just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday after reports of a crash involving an e-bike and a Honda Pilot. When police arrived, they found the teen suffering critical injuries in the roadway. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Tyler Waldal, a Wauconda resident. Police said the 44-year-old woman driving the SUV, along with her passenger, were unhurt in the crash. The driver has been cooperating with the investigation, and no charges have been filed so far.
A police commander speaking on behalf of the family described Tyler as a dedicated student who loved his friends and enjoyed sports, adding that his death would deeply affect his siblings and loved ones. By Wednesday, a memorial had begun forming near Wauconda High School, close to where the crash took place.
Officials noted that Tyler was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but it did not appear to be fastened correctly, raising fresh concerns about safety gear use among young riders.
The tragedy comes as state lawmakers have recently passed new legislation aimed at regulating e-bikes and similar electric devices, including age limits and added safety requirements for higher-speed models. The bill is currently awaiting the governor’s signature.
Wauconda’s police chief said he supports uniform statewide rules and stronger parental education around the speed and risks associated with modern e-bikes and e-motorcycles, stressing that such steps could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Investigators say the case remains under review, and the driver has not been cited in connection with the crash.
