BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. — Concern is growing among thousands of bald eagle fans after Jackie, the beloved female eagle featured on Big Bear’s popular live nest camera, is believed to have been injured following an apparent confrontation with two younger bald eagles near Big Bear Lake.
While wildlife officials have not officially confirmed the injured bird’s identity, Friends of Big Bear Valley, the organization that operates the famous eagle nest cameras, said recent rescue photos strongly suggest the eagle receiving treatment could be Jackie. The organization is urging the public to wait for verified updates as wildlife experts continue their assessment.
Injured Eagle Rescued After Apparent Attack
According to Friends of Big Bear Valley, an injured adult bald eagle was spotted on the ground near Dana Point Park on the north end of Big Bear Lake on July 16 and 17.
The organization said the eagle was later involved in a brief confrontation with two subadult bald eagles.
“Cellphone video confirmed that the adult was able to fend off the other eagles by turning over and using its talons, but was unable to fly far away,” Friends of Big Bear Valley said.
Wildlife specialists from the Los Angeles County Department of Parks & Recreation’s San Dimas Raptor Rescue safely rescued the injured eagle, which is now receiving treatment at a specialized wildlife rehabilitation facility.
Jackie Missing From Popular Nest Camera
Although officials have not confirmed the eagle is Jackie, her unexplained absence from the live nest camera has fueled concern among viewers who have followed her family for years.
Recent livestream footage shows Shadow, Jackie’s longtime mate, remaining at the nest with the pair’s two juvenile eaglets, Sandy and Luna, while Jackie has not appeared for several days.
“Based on recently released photos from the rescue we believe it could be our Jackie,” Friends of Big Bear Valley said.
The organization also noted that Jackie is not banded, making it difficult to positively identify her from a distance.
Officials Urge Public Not to Speculate
The Los Angeles County Department of Parks & Recreation released photos of the rescue Sunday, showing the injured eagle before it was transported for treatment.
Officials said video recorded before the rescue showed the bird wading through the lake and standing on a boat, behavior suggesting it may have been unable to fly.
However, authorities emphasized that the eagle’s identity and even its sex have not yet been confirmed.
“The eagle’s identity and sex have not been confirmed,” the department said. “We ask the public to avoid speculation and rely only on verified updates from the organizations involved.”
Wildlife experts say additional information will be shared once veterinarians complete their evaluation.

Jackie and Shadow have become internet favorites through Big Bear’s live nest cameras, attracting millions of viewers who have watched the pair raise multiple eaglets over the years.
As news of the rescue spread, supporters flooded social media with messages of hope for the injured eagle’s recovery.
Friends of Big Bear Valley also encouraged followers to remain patient while experts care for the bird.
“This eagle is in the best place it can be, it is being cared for, and we are sending positive thoughts along,” the organization said. “For now, please be kind to each other.”
Wildlife officials say the eagle remains under professional care, and further updates will be released once its identity and condition can be confirmed.
