CERRITOS, California — A man armed with a knife was shot and killed inside a popular barbecue restaurant in Cerritos on Sunday afternoon after authorities say he refused repeated commands to drop the weapon and continued behaving erratically inside the business.
The shooting occurred shortly after 2 p.m. at a restaurant in the 11000 block of South Street, where deputies responded following reports of a violent incident. Investigators say a customer with a valid concealed carry permit fired the fatal shot after confronting the armed man.
Knife-Wielding Man Created Chaos Inside Restaurant
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the man was running through the restaurant’s kitchen and dining area while stabbing himself with a knife, creating a dangerous situation for employees and customers.
Authorities said another man inside the restaurant, who was legally carrying a concealed firearm, drew his weapon and repeatedly ordered the individual to drop the knife.
“When that person refused to disarm, the man armed with the firearm fatally shot him inside the restaurant,” sheriff’s officials told KTLA.
The knife-wielding man was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation Underway
Detectives remained at the restaurant for several hours Sunday as they gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses to determine exactly what led up to the shooting.
Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased or provided additional details about what may have caused his behavior before the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under active investigation.
Authorities Say There Is No Ongoing Threat
Following the incident, the City of Cerritos asked residents to avoid the 11300 block of South Street while investigators processed the crime scene.
Officials emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to the public and that the situation had been safely contained.
Witnesses who were inside the restaurant at the time of the shooting are continuing to cooperate with investigators.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional information to come forward.
