BALDWIN PARK, Calif. — One person has died and approximately 60 residents have been displaced after a massive fire tore through a residential building in Baldwin Park on Sunday night, prompting a multi-alarm emergency response from firefighters across Los Angeles County.
The blaze broke out at a residential structure on 12828 E. Ramona Boulevard around 8:25 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Fire crews arrived to find heavy flames engulfing the building and quickly upgraded the response as the fire continued to spread.
Fire Quickly Escalates to Three Alarms
Fire officials initially requested a second-alarm response shortly after arriving at the scene as firefighters battled intense flames from outside the building.
Due to the size and intensity of the fire, crews adopted a defensive strategy, focusing on preventing the blaze from spreading while ensuring the safety of firefighters and nearby residents. A third-alarm response was issued around 9:20 p.m., bringing additional personnel and equipment to the scene.
Authorities said firefighters worked for more than two hours before gaining control of the blaze.
One Person Confirmed Dead
Officials confirmed that one person was pronounced dead following the fire. However, authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity or explained the circumstances surrounding the death.
Investigators are also working to determine whether the victim was inside the building when the fire started.
Officials have not confirmed any additional injuries, and it remains unclear if anyone else required medical treatment.
Dozens of Residents Forced From Their Homes
The fire forced approximately 60 residents to evacuate the residential complex as thick smoke and flames spread through the building.
Video from the scene showed firefighters working under dark, smoke-filled skies while displaced residents gathered nearby, watching emergency crews battle the blaze.
Firefighters eventually brought the fire under control, announcing a knockdown shortly after 10:30 p.m.
A Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson said crews remained at the scene overnight to extinguish remaining hot spots and ensure the fire did not reignite.
Investigation Into Cause Underway
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Fire investigators are expected to examine the damaged structure to determine where the blaze began and what may have sparked it. Authorities have not indicated whether foul play is suspected.
Officials are also working to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate assistance for residents displaced by the fire.
“The cause of the fire remains under investigation,” fire officials said after crews completed suppression efforts.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department is expected to release additional information as the investigation continues.
