BROOKLYN, New York — An 18-year-old woman was shot during an apparent armed robbery on a Brooklyn subway platform late Sunday night after police said a suspect attempted to steal her purse, triggering a violent struggle that ended with a single gunshot.
The shooting occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m. on the downtown 2 train platform at the President Street–Medgar Evers College Station in Crown Heights. Authorities said the victim was struck in the chest and rushed to the hospital, where she is expected to survive.
Robbery Attempt Turns Violent
According to the New York Police Department, the suspect allegedly grabbed the woman’s purse in an attempted robbery. During a struggle between the two, the suspect fired one shot, striking the 18-year-old in the chest.
Responding officers quickly transported the victim to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County in a police cruiser, where she was listed in stable condition after receiving emergency treatment.
Police said a single bullet fragment was recovered from the scene as investigators processed the subway platform.
Suspect Discarded Stolen Bag Before Escaping
Investigators were able to track the victim’s bag after it was taken during the robbery. Officers later recovered it outside 1762 Pacific Street, where police believe the suspect searched through its contents before discarding it.
The suspect fled the area on foot and remained at large as of Monday.
Police described the suspect as wearing a red New York Yankees cap with a white logo, black shorts, black sneakers, a black face mask, and a backpack at the time of the shooting.
Subway Service Temporarily Suspended
The shooting prompted a temporary suspension of No. 2 train service between Franklin Avenue–Medgar Evers College and Church Avenue while detectives investigated the crime scene.
Service has since resumed, although officials reported residual delays as crews completed their investigation.
“The victim has been stabilized after being transported to the hospital,” police said, while confirming that investigators are continuing to search for the armed suspect.
Authorities have not announced an arrest or released a possible motive beyond the apparent robbery attempt. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the NYPD.
