Knife-Wielding Man Shot Dead by Armed Customer Inside Cerritos Restaurant, Authorities Say

CERRITOS, Calif. — A man armed with a knife was shot and killed inside a popular barbecue restaurant in Cerritos on Sunday afternoon after authorities say he refused repeated commands to drop the weapon and continued acting erratically inside the business.

The fatal shooting occurred shortly after 2 p.m. in the 11000 block of South Street, where deputies responded to reports of a violent disturbance. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the incident ended when a customer with a valid concealed carry permit opened fire after the knife-wielding man allegedly ignored orders to disarm.

Knife-Wielding Man Caused Chaos Inside Restaurant

Investigators said the man was running through the restaurant’s kitchen and dining area while repeatedly stabbing himself with a knife, creating panic among customers and employees.

Authorities said a bystander who was legally carrying a concealed firearm confronted the man and instructed him to put the knife down.

“The individual refused to drop the knife,” sheriff’s officials told KTLA, adding that the armed civilian then fired his weapon after the suspect failed to comply.

The man was struck by gunfire inside the restaurant and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation Underway

Deputies quickly secured the restaurant and launched a homicide investigation to determine the full sequence of events.

Officials have not released the identity of the deceased or provided additional details regarding what led to the incident. Investigators are reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses who were inside the restaurant when the shooting occurred.

Authorities have not announced whether the armed civilian will face any charges as the investigation remains ongoing.

City Says There Is No Ongoing Threat

Following the shooting, the City of Cerritos urged residents to avoid the 11300 block of South Street while investigators processed the scene.

Officials also reassured the public that there was no ongoing threat to the community.

Witnesses remained outside the restaurant as detectives collected evidence and worked to piece together exactly what happened during the chaotic incident.

Authorities Seek Witnesses

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional information to come forward.
