Baltimore, Maryland — Baltimore police are asking for the public’s help after newly released surveillance video captured a violent attack on a 74-year-old man outside a 7-Eleven, where investigators say a group of six young males surrounded the victim while at least one suspect displayed an assault-style rifle and another carried a sword.
The incident happened around 3:24 a.m. on July 7 outside the convenience store on Liberty Heights Avenue, across from Mondawmin Mall, and investigators are continuing to search for those responsible.
Surveillance Video Captures Violent Assault
According to police, the victim was standing outside the closed convenience store when two suspects approached while displaying what appeared to be a firearm.
Moments later, four additional suspects joined the confrontation.
Surveillance footage shows the group allegedly shoving the elderly man, throwing objects at him and eventually knocking him to the ground before continuing the assault.
Investigators say the attackers repeatedly kicked the victim and struck him in the head with what appeared to be an assault-style rifle, while another suspect was seen carrying a sword during the incident.
The attack reportedly continued for about 10 minutes before the group left the scene.
Victim Kept Getting Back Up During Attack
Despite being surrounded and repeatedly assaulted, the victim continued trying to defend himself.
Newly obtained security footage reportedly shows him getting back to his feet several times, even confronting one of the armed suspects before eventually returning to his vehicle.
Police said the man was later able to drive away in his Honda Odyssey and was treated for minor bruising.
A customer familiar with the victim praised his determination after watching the surveillance video.
“He’s tough for real. He’s a G, basically. He could’ve run,” said Tat Burch, a regular customer who lives nearby.
Employees Believe Suspects Were Attempting to Rob Victim
Employees told local media the victim is a regular customer who may have believed the store was open when he arrived.
They also explained the location no longer operates 24 hours a day because of repeated violent incidents, particularly involving juveniles.
Workers believe the confrontation may have started as an attempted robbery, although investigators have not officially confirmed a motive.
Community members expressed shock over the violence shown in the surveillance footage.
“Who would do that? A person with no empathy, no heart,” said Nicole Johnson, a customer who works with city youth.
Police Continue Search for Six Suspects
Baltimore police described the suspects as six young males and are urging anyone with information to contact investigators.
The release of additional surveillance footage is expected to help identify those involved in the attack.
The assault comes as Baltimore officials have reported a significant decline in homicides compared with the same period last year. However, police continue investigating violent crimes across the city, including this case.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the suspects or the incident to contact Citywide Robbery detectives at 410-366-6311 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests had been announced in connection with the attack at the time of the latest update.
